About the Tests

  • In 2007-2008 Vermont used the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 and 11 in reading and math, and grades 5, 8 and 11 in writing.
  • The results for all elementary and middle school grades are combined and displayed on GreatSchools profiles as Elementary & Middle School results. Grade 11 results are displayed as High School results.
  • The NECAP, given in the fall, tests students on content taught in the previous year. The results displayed are for the school where the content was taught, rather than the school where the test was administered.
  • The NECAP is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Vermont.
  • The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level on the test.

  • The different student groups are identified by the Vermont Department of Education. If there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group, the state doesn't report data for that group.
  • The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level on the test.
